[edit]Original posting is bio from Centennial History of Oregon (pub. domain). Needs modernization, cutting of superflous material and reformatting to encyc. style. There is some additional info. about Abel D. Helman available online that may be in the public domain, including excerpts from his diary. Some useful print items could include: O'Harra Marjorie. The Ashland Story. Ashland, OR; Lewis Osborne, 1971 and Ashland: The First 130 Years. Jacksonville, OR; Southern Oregon Historical Society, 1981. Bancroft, Hubert Howe. History of Oregon. 2 vols., San Francisco, CA; The History Co., 1888. Walling, A.G.. History of Southern Oregon: Comprising Jackson, Josephine, Douglas, Curry and Coos Counties. Portland, OR; A.G. Walling, 1884. Atwood, Kay. Mill Creek Journal: Ashland, Oregon, 1850-1860.; no listed pub., 1987. This last one includes excerpts from Abel's Diaries. The collections of the Southern Oregon Hist. Society and Ashland Public Library have numerous photos of Abel which should be readily approved for posting. If not I have posted a photo of his tombstone in Ashland Cemetery. I cleaned up this article, and tried to make it more neutral, etc. I'm sure more work could be done with other sources. Mdazey (talk) 19:18, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
